Press Release Body = CINCINNATI, OH - September 5, 2006 - Since the age of two, Preston Bentley has dreamed of flying among the clouds. And he's dreamed of helping people and making the world a better place. This month, he'll make those dreams reality by embarking on a cross country flight around the contiguous United States, touching down in 48 states and covering nearly 8,000 nautical miles in just 30 days. Flying in a Sky Skooter T-11, donated for the trip by Dallas-based IndUS Aviation, Preston's journey will be the first of its kind ever made in a Light Sport Aircraft.
Preston, 26, who works at Blue Ash Aviation & There by Air Charters at the Blue Ash Airport north of Cincinnati, will kick off his adventure on September 17 during the Blue Ash Airshow. He has two goals. The first: honor Seth Bailey, Preston's close friend and cousin who passed away in April 2004 at age 21 from complications from central hypoventilation syndrome, which was the result of having meningioencephalitis as an infant. Seth lived most of his life with a tracheotomy tube attached to his throat and was forced to undergo countless operations throughout his childhood, many of which took place at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Residents of Virginia, Seth's family made frequent visits to the local Ronald McDonald House while in Cincinnati and came to know and love the people there.
The second goal: raise at least $500,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Cincinnati, which will be donated in Seth's name and memory. The non-profit organization provides a home away from home and emotional support for families of critically ill children receiving medical treatment at area hospitals. There are 259 Ronald McDonald Houses in 28 countries worldwide, providing more than 6,000 bedrooms each night. Online donations are being accepted at www.rmhcincinnati.org or checks can be made out to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Cincinnati (noting Seth Bailey Memorial Flight on the memo line), 350 Erkenbrecher Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45229.
"This journey is about Seth and all the children who will benefit from the money raised in his name," explains Preston. "I want to do something good for this world, and I want to see and experience as much of it as possible in the process. This adventure gives me the chance to do both. Seth had a contagious love for life. I'm only one of many who were profoundly affected by the way he viewed the world, but I'm honored to be able to celebrate his spirit in this small way."
Preston has mapped out his flight path: he will touch down in all 48 contiguous states and make stops in several cities to visit local Ronald McDonald Houses and meet and interact with the children and their families. His progress will be tracked online at http://blog.rmhcincinnati.org and Preston will keep an online journal on that site to chronicle his adventure and allow him to correspond with Ronald McDonald House children all along the way.
Bill and Amy Christian, owners of Blue Ash Aviation & There by Air Charters and Preston's employers, are coordinating the event and couldn't be happier to support the historic flight. They are actively contacting individuals and companies in their aviation network to solicit goods, services or financial donations to make the journey possible. By providing for all the event expenditures, 100% of received cash donations will go directly to Ronald McDonald House.
"From Tom Gunnarson, who is president of the Light Aircraft Manufacturers Association, to Ram Pattisapu, the president of IndUS Aviation who donated the airplane, we have been amazed at the generous outpouring of support from people around the country," said Amy Christian. "Preston is a great young man, and when he came to us with the seed of an idea, we saw the tremendous opportunity to raise funds for a great cause and promote the wonders of aviation. We're very excited to help him realize this dream."
Other project sponsors include Hulse Stucki, PLLC of Irving, Texas, which is donating all legal work for the trip, and Nationair and USAIG, which are donating and providing the insurance coverage.
